This is a poem written by the incomparable Maya Angelou, that Queen Latifah read during Michael Jackson's Memorial Concert at the Staple Centre on 7th July 2009. We had him, indeed!
We Had Him by Dr. Maya Angelou
Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing,
Now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.
Without notice our dear love can escape our doting embrace,
Sing our songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon.
In the instance we learn that Michael is gone we know nothing.
No clocks can tell our time and no oceans can rush our tides.
With the abrupt absence of our treasure, though we are many, each is achingly alone, piercingly alone.
Only when we confess our confusion, can we remember that he was a gift to us.
And we did have him.
He came to us from the Creator
Trailing creativity and abundance,
Despite the anguish of life,
He was sheathed in mother love, and family love, and survival.
And did not more than that, he thrived in passion and compassion, humor and style.
We had him whether we knew who he was or did not know,
He was ours and we were his. We had him, beautiful, delighting our eyes
He raked his hat, slant over his brow, and took a pose on his toes for all of us.
And we laughed and stomped our feet for him.
We were enchanted with his passion, because he held nothing.
He gave us all that he had been given.
Today in Tokyo, beneath the Eiffel Tower, in Ghana’s Black Star Square, in Johannesburg and Pittsburgh.
In Birmingham, Alabama and Birmingham, England,
We are missing Michael Jackson.
But we do know, we had him. And we are the world.

DIY Centrepiece Idea
I've just realized that I haven't updated this blog for 3 months!! Now that's shameful. Guess it just means I have some serious blogging to do.
So without any delay...
I had a few people over at my place the other night and I made these flower arrangements. As talented as I think I am [.....***let me shift before that lightning strikes ;)], it was a very easy project which just meant buying different flowers in the same color, and putting each different flower in its own clear square vase. After adding some candles in simple votives, we had a nice bright table arrangement.
So I think this would also make an easy and beautiful arrangement for the centre of the reception tables. Using the usual round table, perhaps you can use smaller vases and fewer flowers in each. But it would look very nice in any color.

Hot Pink and Orange
I'm not sure if it's just the new year, or that I'm really slowly getting over my obsession with all-white weddings. But since the beginning of the year, I've really been loving vibrant colorful weddings. I do still get heart palpitations when I see a beautiful wedding in cool whites, but I get a little more excited when I see a wedding with lots of bright colours.
One color combination that's really exciting me these days is a bright pink and orange wedding. Just look at these details:

This Day
When I got married, I had a good friend sing during the church ceremony. And I asked her to sing "This Day" by Whitney Houston. Of course she was amazing, but I was so excited when I found that someone else had posted Whitney singing it on Youtube. So, I'm selfishly adding it to this blog, it was after all, my wedding song.
